Some brands (see below) take back their used cartridges at their customer service centers but returning them is not convenient for most people given the remote location of these centers.
Until there is a more convenient option for people to recycle their used cartridges, Trash is our top recommendation.
Up until the end of 2021 it was possible to drop ink and toner cartridges at recycling bins located at public libraries. This programme, known as Project Homecoming, has now ended. Why was the initiative killed? We have no idea!

While it is difficult for individual households to recycle printer ink, all the big brands have office recycling programmes. Does your company recycle them? Encourage them to do it! Click through to the providers above for more info.
Info & Insights
Contrary to popular belief, ink toner is not toxic. However the toner dust can irritate eyes and skin and definitely should not be inhaled! So before you throw it in the trash, seal the cartridge in a plastic bag or the replacement cartridge packaging.
If you are uncomfortable with handling these cartridges, consider using gloves and/or simple safety goggles. These may prevent the dusty printer toner from entering your airway or eyes. They are not necessary for safety but may make you feel more comfortable particularly if you are easily irritated by toner dust.
