While biodegradable, this is extremely difficult to compost at home.
Containers and tableware made from bagasse tends to have a waterproof coating making it very resistant to breaking down under normal home composting conditions.
Info & Insights
Bagasse is a pulp-based cardboard-like compostable material made from sugar cane fibres.
It is often used for food takeaway containers or plates and bowls. For instance the “paper” plates and bowls at Guzman y Gomez are made from bagasse that has a food safe waterproof coating.
While it is biodegradable, in Singapore there are no facilities where it can be composted (read more here).
Likewise, it cannot be recycled as paper because it is not made from wood pulp.
Because this is made from waste material, it is one of the better biodegradable alternatives to plastic and paper (unlike those grown from virgin plant material).
However you will still need to throw it in the trash when you have finished using it.
