Rechargeable batteries are not only collected but recycled (unlike alkaline batteries). Recycling lithium-ion batteries is less costly than normal non-rechargeable batteries (alkaline) which is why so few places recycle the latter but do recycle the former.
This is another reason to switch to rechargeable batteries.
