Vegetable food scraps can sometimes be composted. So can coffee grounds and egg shells. Check with your community garden to find out if they do composting and what types of food waste they take.
Want to learn about composting it yourself? Search online for info about Bokashi bins or join the worm composting group on Facebook.

Trash
When disposing of food waste in the trash, make sure it is well wrapped up and sealed to discourage pests and to be considerate to workers.
It is generally not possible to compost non-veg food waste (meat, fat, oils, etc).
There are some exceptions to this and if you really wan to go down the rabbit hole of Black Soldier Fly ("BSF") composting, there is a Facebook group for that.
But for most people, such food waste should be bagged and trashed.

Tips & Suggestions
Some ideas to avoid food waste:
- Make sure you know what is in your fridge and cupboard so it gets eaten before it goes bad! Try Fridge Shuffling.
- Do not over-order food when getting take-away.
- Be realistic when estimating food needs when grocery shopping
- Get creative with leftovers
- Dial back the need to have excess and “abundance” during celebrations.
Info & Insights
For individuals try to live more sustainably, avoiding food waste has, by far, more impact than just about any other zero waste habit at home. Think of all the energy that has gone into growing, packaging, refrigerating, transporting, and storing your food. When you waste it, you are wasting a LOT of energy and carbon.
It is estimated that 30% of food imported to Singapore is wasted.
